Have you ever had that feeling of "I'm with him!" around your husband? I remember the first time I felt like that was when I saw Clay's "band" (sorry, babe, but I do use that term loosely) playing at BQ Ball in 1999. I had actually broken up with him, and this was our first date back together. Just a few chords into the first song he dropped his pick (certainly because he was distracted looking at me!) and, therefore, had to play the rest of the gig with his fingers. This resulted in very - VERY - bloody fingers because it was, after all, a rock song. Well, in the mind of 20 year old Lisa, bloody fingers on a guitar are incredibly cool and I just kept standing there among the hundreds of other people thinking, "I'm with HIM!"

I digress. I have had this feeling many times over the past 10 years. Just a couple of months ago at Nick & Randi's wedding I felt like that when he was playing a song for them. And no, I'm not THAT superficial that I only feel this when he has a guitar strapped around his neck and that amazing voice is singing - but it certainly doesn't hurt! But I felt like this again on Sunday. Right after Christmas our church was asked to bring forward names of men they felt could serve as deacons. Sunday Clay was one of four men installed as a deacon, and I sat up on the front pew with him thinking, "I'm with him." Anyone that knows him knows that he's a great man, a faithful husband, a good teacher, a devoted father, an honest friend, a dedicated Christian, a hard worker... But it's like I wanted to stand up and just tell everyone there about all of the other things that make him amazing.
I love you, Clay, and I know how blessed I am. And it's a good thing all of those church members haven't seen this face or I'm sure they would have re-thought their nomination...
Clay, I know that I've told you this many, many times but I don't think that I've ever written it. Chris and I are so proud to call you family. You are everything we ever prayed that our daughter would find in a life mate. Your commitment to living your life to the glory of God and His church is evident in all that you do. You and your family have been a blessing to the New York Avenue church family. God bless you!
ReplyDeleteOh, I have and you inspired me to blog about it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear Clay sing sometime!
Congratulations, Deacon Clay!
Congrats Clay!
ReplyDeleteWay to go, Clay! That's great!
ReplyDeleteLisa,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post. I remember that feeling well. I am so glad that there are men in the world that are willing to put God first and teach that to others. Congrats Clay may God use you and your family for his good works.

I love this post. I am glad to know that I am not the only one who thinks this. I too feel like I have such a wonderful husband. To tell you the truth I probably wouldn't have even considered him if it weren't for you. Do you remember the time you told me something like, "Of all those guys Josh would be the best boyfriend." I remember it very well because it was an ah hah moment for me. Anyway, God could not have matched us up more perfectly and now you know how you played a role in his plan.
ReplyDeleteOh My Goodness! Remember the Preston Crest days? We have come a long way, baby!
