Unfortunately, Rachel became the proud owner of 6 band-aids today...and she'll add to it tomorrow. Today I took her back to the pediatrician for her 4 month check-up, and also as her follow up visit from 2 weeks ago. As I said in a previous post, I took her in a couple of weeks ago because she was only eating 4 times a day, and she was sleeping a lot. The pediatrician wanted us to come back in 2 weeks (today), with hopes that she would have gained at least half a pound. Well, it turns out that she only gained 1.5 ounces in the past week, so he is a little concerned (apparently babies should gain between 0.5 ounces and 1 pound a week). We added a fifth feeding each day during the past two weeks, but that didn't really stimulate any significant weight gain. So, now we're on to the testing phase. We went to the hospital this evening for some blood work, and we'll go back tomorrow for a blood gas and a urine sample (let me tell you, it was NOT FUN). He's checking for any metabolic disorders, thyroid disorders, food allergies, and a few other things I believe. He also suggested that I keep a very detailed log of her feedings, how much she spits up, and how many wet/dirty diapers she has over the next week, and then we'll check her again. Since she's breastfed, we really have no idea how many ounces she gets a day, so my pump and I will now become best friends so we can measure how much she's actually eating. Oh, and on top of all this, she got 4 vaccinations at the doctor's office - let's just say this afternoon/evening will never top our best days list.
But, on the good side, she is developmentally right on track. She does all of the things a 4 month old should do, so we're thankful for that. She is content, smiley, sweet, cute, happy, and a great sleeper. We would appreciate prayers for our sweet girl. If she is having some type of medical issue, we pray that our doctor will be able to diagnose it and that we can get Rachel back on track. I will keep everyone posted as we find out more this week.
So, let me just say that you guys have your share plus a lot of other people's share of medical issues, but the grace and faith you show are an example to the rest of us. We will pray for little Rachel and the rest of you guys.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be praying for sweet Rachel to gain weight and for the doctors to figure out what's going on. Hope she's feeling better from shots today.
