Hard things

My incredibly talented mom has been developing new curriculum for our toddler classes at church, and I have to say that it is amazing.  She's also teaching Ethan's class right now, and I'm so impressed with how much he's learning.  Their lesson Sunday morning was about David and Goliath, but the point of the lesson was that God helps us do hard things.  Well, Monday Ethan went to the church building with my mom to "help" her work, and when he woke up from his nap he wanted some milk.  His milk was in the refrigerator in the kitchen in the gym, and according to E it is "very dark and scary back there."  This is how the conversation ensued:

E:  Nana, I want some milk.
Nana:  Ethan, I can't get up right now, but you know where your milk is.
E:  But I can't go by myself.
Nana:  Do you remember what we talked about yesterday in Bible class?
E:  God helped David do hard things.
Nana:  And God can help you do a hard thing like go get your milk even when it's dark.
E:  And I won't be scared?
Nana:  You won't be scared.
----a few minutes later----
E:  Nana, Nana!  God helped me do a hard thing and I got my milk all by myself!

I love that at 3 years old he can already put his trust in God.  Thanks, Mom, for being such a great teacher for Ethan.

Now maybe God can help me do a hard thing and let Ethan go out in public looking like this -

(Next on the to-do list - get rid of Rachel's pacifier so Ethan will stop walking around with it.)

  2. That is such a sweet story!! Oh...and when you get rid of Rachel's pacifier, let me know how you do it!! We are going to brave that with Mallory but I really am scared b/c it will be a battle for sure! But...I would say do it NOW so you aren't in our shoes when she has to take it out of her mouth to talk...AHHHHH!

  5. That is so weird because I have been researching different books to help Mak learn about people in the bible, and that story with E is why I have been looking! Way to go Nana!

  6. Bless his little cottons! That is such a sweet story! He is just precious! (Hey at least he doesn't want to go out with your high-heels, a purse and makeup on! Edward's cousin tried to do that once - he had 2 sisters and 3 girl cousins!)

I thought when I read the title that the hard thing was going to be seeing your baby girl turn 1!

  8. I just have to add some side notes here. This is one those moments that will stay with me forever, I'm sure. If you know Ethan at all, you know the nothing comes between him and his milk, yet his reply is ALWAYS "it is too scary" when he is asked to get his milk when he is with me at the church building. When this played out last Monday I honestly just felt God's gentle nudge to seize this opportunity to make a Bible principle personal to his young life. I have always found that to be a challenge with teaching toddlers. The HUGE smile on his face when he rounded the corner of the education wing at a full speed run with his milk cup in his hand was a sight to behold, but when he said "Nana, God helped me do a hard thing".....that was priceless.
